Come Together Kids: Jello Aquariums

For my girls’ Under the Ocean birthday party, I wanted a little something special to serve as a snack. I found this recipe on the Jello website and figured I’d give it a try (with a few adjustments). They were a big hit when I brought them out at the party ~ although there were mixed reviews on the actual taste of them (I’ll explain more later).

Pretty cute, isn’t it?

Here’s what you’ll need (to make approx 8):

  • two 3 oz boxes of blue jello (or one bigger 6 oz box)
  • gummy fish
  • clear plastic cups
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 cups cold water
  • whipped cream (optional)

Here’s what to do:

1. Make the jello according the package directions ~ pour powder into a bowl, add 2 cups boiling water, stir about 2 minutes until completely dissolved, add the cold water.

2. Pour approx. 1/2 cup of the jello into individual clear plastic cups and refrigerate for about 2 hours until it’s soft set. You want it to be gelled enough that the fish won’t sink to the bottom, but not so hard that you can’t push them in.

3. Put about 3-4 gummy fish in each cup of jello. I found it worked well to spear a fish with a toothpick, push it into the jello, then use another toothpick to release it.

Ready to put in my speared fish.
Using a second toothpick to release it in place.

4. Put back in the fridge for about another two hours to fully set.

Now, here’s where the problem arose. I had to make these the night before the party and by party time, the fish had developed a weird texture. Although they pretty much retained their shape, they were almost totally soft like the jello and tasted kind of funny. Some kids didn’t mind at all, but several of them picked out the fish after the first bite. Serving the jello immediately after it was ready would probably reduce the amount of texture change in the fish. Overall, though, it was still a huge hit and I plan on making them again with my kids. (NOTE: After the party, I did some more googling and found another recipe using thin slices of fruit cut into fish shapes ~ I bet that might work better!)

Here’s our Jello Aquariums at the party:

You can see the texture change in the fish a bit.
A satisfied party guest!

Do feel free to ask questions, I will save some of the common questions and answers here so you don’t have to trail through comments to find my replies 🙂

What will it cost?

We are thinking 19.99 GBP (24.99 USD). This subject to regional pricing based around what taxes different users pay and may change based on currency exchange rates.

Are there any subscription fees or is this a one off purchase?

There are no subscription fees required for playing Capsa, no ‘Premium’ model and no in-game currency model. Just like buying a regular game from Steam.

When do you plan on releasing?

Sometime in the fall, we are liking September but specific details will be made available nearer the time.

Will there be vehicles?

We plan for vehicles yes, this includes Boats, Helicopters and Go-Karts. These will be part of the development of the first season pass, however some boats and go-karts will be made available to everyone, once these systems are developed.

Linux, Mac OS, Steam OS etc.

We would like to do all of those yes (with Steamplay support and cross platform multiplayer) but as we are a small team we can’t guarantee we will have them all supported for launch. We have started an indiegogo campaign to help us add in this requested support.

What languages will you support?

Well beyond English we will be looking at German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, but we can’t make any promises about whether these will be included at launch at this time, more details will follow closer to launch. We have started an indiegogo campaign to help us translate the game into more languages.

VR Support?

This is something we would like to support, are quite keen on it actually. We will look at HTC Vive first, and we have started an indiegogo campaign to help us add in Oculus Rift and OSVR.

Which engine do you use?

Unreal Engine 4.

How big is your team?

Just the two of us working on this project. We have quite a lot of ambition on where to take it beyond outlined features, but our priority is just to see what we’ve mentioned to launch and have a stable product and foundation to build upon later.

Is this multiplayer exclusive?

You can play locally without requiring to be online and nothing is restricted to multiplayer. Though most the fun will be in playing the game with friends or being in a world with other people.

How big is your team?

Just the two of us working on this project.
